The History of Cheer

Lawrence Herkimer was an SMU cheerleader who excelled in raising school spirit and leading the fans through cheers, tumbling, and his signature “Herkie” jump. His electric personality and commitment to teaching young cheerleaders how to “lead the crowd” and be leaders in their schools and communities began with his first camp at Sam Houston State Teachers College in Huntsville, Texas in 1948. That was the beginning of what became the most respected and trusted cheerleader company in the world – the National Cheerleaders Association.
